In 1808, New York sold this island to the federal government, and it was used as a fort and powder magazine. From 1892 to 1924, it became the nation’s major immigration station. During this period, approximately 17 million immigrants passed through the Ellis Island, for this they were checked by the authorities of immigration and then were able to go into United States of America. In 1943, the immigration authorities had move its reception desk properly to New York City, till 1954 Island persistently served and perform the duty as custody place for exiles and foreigners. In 1965, this Island became the component of Statue of Liberty National Monument beside close Liberty Island and once again opened for tourists by National Park Service in 1979. In 1980s, the additional components and the core building of the island were reconstructed. However, in the year of 1990 the building and the island was opened for the tourists as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum.
New Jersey has the authorization of the Island but conventionally it had been regarded as the core part of the New York City, and this issue has become conflict amongst the two cities that is New Jersey and NYC over a long period. According to a contract or agreement in 1834 amid the NYC and New Jersey gave the control of 3.3-acre of Island to NYC. Further more in 1998, the Supreme Court of United States permitted the NYC to keep hold of 3.3-acre area of land whereas other remaining area of island was granted to New Jersey, which was composed of landfill added up after the year of 1834 to New Jersey State.
